In 1997, Gravity Wax's “Acoustically Inert Dense Gravity Mechanism” 10" expressed a great deal of songwriting maturity since we had last heard from the Detroit space rock/pop pioneers two years earlier.

about

“Acoustically Inert Dense Gravity Mechanism” by Detroit space rock/pop pioneers Gravity Wax were their first recordings after nearly two years of hibernation amidst a string of releases on Burnt Hair, Mind Expansion, Audio Information Phenomena, and 100 Guitar Mania – most notably their album “Low Energy Particulate”. These six songs reaffirmed the band’s leanings toward Moog-dependent space pop and displayed the somberness of a new direction.

Erik Kassab and John Hardin grew up together in Trenton, Michigan and began creating atmospheres on an 8-track machine in Erik’s living room in early 1994. This textural drone music migrated to a number of radio stations without the band’s intent or permission. Several of these DJs then pursued the band for more songs to play on their shows and soon enough John and Erik took another look at their creations as more of a result of a “band” recording for an audience – which was not the original intent of creating what they had.

Ryan Anderson joined the band on drums to record their first batches of proper songs following the duo’s cassette experiments. Ryan left Gravity Wax to form form Fuxa with Randall Niemann and longtime friend Rob Moon played drums on all six of these tracks.

On “Acoustically Inert Dense Gravity Mechanism” John and Erik shared their appreciation for the ‘60s British Invasion as well as Sebadoh, Guided By Voices, Stereolab and Pavement – with perhaps a nod to The Silver Apples – in their own unique way. These references points may be best witnessed on their version of The Rolling Stones’ “2,000 Light Years From Home” (with the assistance of Randall Niemann on guitar).
